Tasting notes

Barbe Rac 2024 boasts an intense garnet robe. Its profound nose opens with an explosion of Mediterranean herbs, spices such as licorice, dark chocolate, and ripe strawberry. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and fleshy, with a round and warm texture. The tannins, perfectly integrated thanks to a long maceration, give the wine exceptional density. The persistent and flavorful finish confirms a majestic balance between power and finesse. This cuvée delivers a captivating interpretation of Grenache in its purest and noblest form.

Food & wine pairings

Perfect with a lamb tagine with prunes, a wild boar stew or a confit lamb shoulder.

Owner and history

The Barbe Rac plot sits on a Quaternary terrace covered with rounded pebbles, typical of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, which promote optimal grape ripening. The complex geology of the soil, a blend of clay and limestone, enriches the wine with a beautiful minerality. The 90-year-old vines draw the elements of the terroir from deep within. Cultivated biodynamically and subjected to rigorous sorting, they offer concentrated fruit. This exceptional terroir gives rise to a dense, pure, structured, and elegant wine.

Vinification and aging

At Domaine M. Chapoutier, the Barbe Rac wine is made with meticulous care to preserve the purity of the Grenache grape. Only the free-run juice is retained after fermentation in closed concrete tanks to limit oxidation. Maceration lasts three weeks at 30–33°C to gently extract the tannins. Aging for 16 months in concrete tanks respects the terroir's identity. This approach results in a dense, precise wine that is profoundly true to its origin.
