The 2011 Pavillon Hermitage Rouge is one of the most emblematic wines of Maison M. Chapoutier , a leading name in the great wines of the Northern Rhône Valley. Located in Tain-l'Hermitage, in the heart of the Hermitage appellation, the estate produces exceptional wines from some of the oldest and most prestigious plots on the hillside. The commitment to biodynamic farming, plot-by-plot vinification, and absolute respect for the terroir give each vintage a unique identity. Pavillon, from a high-altitude granite vineyard, is a concentrated expression of power, finesse, and longevity, worthy of the finest Rhône wines.

Notes and pairings

Tasting notes

The 2011 Pavillon boasts a deep, dark robe with garnet highlights. Its expressive nose reveals complex aromas of ripe black fruit, pepper, graphite, and precious wood. On the palate, the attack is ample, the structure powerful, supported by velvety tannins and a beautiful tension. The long, persistent finish evokes truffle and sweet spices, heralding a wine with exceptional aging potential.

Food & wine pairings

This wine will ideally accompany a matured rib of beef, a hare stew or a 7-hour leg of lamb.

The vineyard at Le Pavillon is perched on the steep slopes of the Hermitage hill, resting on poor soils composed of weathered granite, rich in mica and quartz. The century-old vines, cultivated biodynamically, produce very low yields, ensuring maximum concentration and expression of the terroir. The southern exposure allows for optimal ripening of the Syrah grapes, while preserving the characteristic freshness of great Hermitage wines.

Owner and history

Today, Michel Chapoutier manages the family estate with a clear vision: to reveal the soul of the terroirs through viticulture that respects nature. A pioneer of biodynamic winemaking in the Rhône Valley, he has elevated single-vineyard wines to the status of grand crus. His uncompromising commitment, exacting standards, and intuition have allowed wines like Le Pavillon to establish themselves as absolute benchmarks, recognized worldwide for their purity and depth.

Vinification and aging

Vinification is carried out plot by plot in open concrete vats, with gentle pump-overs to encourage slow and natural extraction. The wine is then aged for 18 to 20 months in oak barrels, the majority of which are new, without fining or filtration.
For Le Pavillon 2011, this precise aging has magnified the richness of the vintage, while preserving the typical minerality of this granitic terroir, resulting in a racy, harmonious and majestic Syrah.
