    Description

Maison M. Chapoutier, established in 1808 in the Rhône Valley, has represented French winemaking excellence for over two centuries. Located in Tain-l'Hermitage, this family-run estate cultivates its vines according to biodynamic principles across the prestigious Rhône appellations. Michel Chapoutier revolutionized the approach to terroir by prioritizing the pure expression of each plot. L'Ermite, the emblematic cuvée made from the oldest vines in Hermitage, embodies the house's philosophy: to reveal the soul of the granitic terroir of this legendary hill. This respectful approach to living organisms produces wines of remarkable authenticity and longevity.

    Notes and pairings

    Tasting notes

The 2012 L'Ermite displays a deep purple robe with violet highlights. The complex nose reveals aromas of candied black fruit, sweet spices, and smoky notes characteristic of the granitic terroir. On the palate, the attack is powerful, structured by noble and silky tannins. Flavors of blackcurrant, black pepper, and licorice unfold harmoniously. The exceptionally long finish expresses all the minerality of Hermitage, promising remarkable aging potential.

    Food & wine pairings

This great Hermitage pairs perfectly with game birds, grilled rib of beef, mature cheeses or intense dark chocolate.

L'Ermite comes from the most prestigious parcels of Hermitage, located at the top of the hill near the chapel. These old Syrah vines, over 80 years old, are rooted in decomposed granite soil, offering perfect drainage. The south-facing exposure and steep slopes concentrate the expression of the fruit. This exceptional terroir, cultivated biodynamically, allows the century-old vines to express all the mineral typicity of this legendary Rhône Grand Cru.

    Owner and history

Michel Chapoutier, an iconic figure in the Rhône Valley, has passionately managed the family estate since 1990. A pioneer of biodynamic viticulture, he revolutionized the approach to terroir by prioritizing the pure expression of each plot. His forward-thinking vision and commitment to sustainable viticulture have elevated Mr. Chapoutier to the ranks of France's finest estates. Today, his children, Mathilde and Maxime, perpetuate this philosophy of excellence, combining family tradition with technical innovation to enhance the exceptional terroirs of the Rhône Valley.

    Vinification and aging

Mr. Chapoutier favors traditional winemaking that respects the integrity of the fruit. Hand-harvesting, fermentation in concrete vats, and gentle pump-overs preserve the expression of the terroir. The wine is aged in French oak barrels for 18 months, 30% of which are new.
For L'Ermite 2012, the rigorous selection of specific vineyard plots and extended aging in barrels reveal the exceptional concentration of this vintage. This prestigious cuvée benefits from meticulous attention to fully express its aging potential.
