- Vineyard and climate
Maury Sec is located in four communes of Languedoc-Roussillon : Maury, Tautavel, Saint-Paul-Fenouillet, and Rasiguères. Covering approximately 200 hectares, the vineyard lies amidst the garrigue scrubland. It stretches across hillsides of schist and black marl.
For this appellation, a minimum of two grape varieties is required, with Grenache Noir making up the majority at 60 to 80%. Carignan Noir, Syrah, Mourvèdre are the complementary grape varieties, and Lledoner Pelut can be added as an optional addition.
- The style of the wines
The Maury Sec AOC produces only red wines, with a fruity character.
These are dark and powerful wines distinguished by their aromas of black fruit.
On the palate, pleasant tannins emerge from these dry wines, providing a good balance.
The structure of Maury Sec wines ensures good aging, so they are often considered wines for aging.
- An exceptional estate: Mas Amiel
Mas Amiel is an estate with 200 years of history, renowned worldwide for its sweet wines and especially its sweet Maury.
The story begins in 1816, when Raymond Etienne Amiel won the estate in a game against the Bishop of Perpignan . At that time, there were 10 hectares of vines in the garrigue.
A few years later, the phylloxera disease destroyed the French wine industry.
Amiel's son replanted the estate using American grape varieties, which had not been affected by the disease.
Today, Mas Amiel , with its unshakeable reputation, continues to delight us with incredible vintages thanks to the talent of the winemakers and their exceptional know-how.
