        the story of Mr. Chapoutier

        Mr. Chapoutier's House

        a family story

Founded in 1808 under the name Maison Calvet et Compagnie, theMr. Chapoutier's Houseis part of a rich history spanning more than two centuries.Polydor Chapoutierwas the first to acquire vineyards, laying the foundations for a vineyard that now covers 360 hectares. This exceptional heritage has seen a succession ofseven generations, each contributing their own stone to the building. In 1897, Marius Chapoutier transformed the company into a major player in the export of wines in Europe, and in 1937, his son Marc renamed the House in homage to his father.

It was in 1990 thatMichel Chapoutier,Marius's great-grandson took over the reins of the House after buying out his grandfather's shares. At that time, the company was considered to be on the verge of collapse, with a turnover of only 2 million euros. Visionary and passionate, Michel multiplied this figure twentyfold in twenty years, revolutionizing the House while perpetuating its traditions. He significantly expanded the vineyard, introduced biodynamic farming across all the plots, and banned all non-natural inputs.

Under his leadership, theMr. Chapoutier's HouseIt expanded internationally with vineyards in Australia, Portugal, and Spain. Innovation became a hallmark, as evidenced by the introduction of Braille on the labels in 1996, a tribute to Maurice Monier de la Sizeranne, an emblematic figure in the House's history. Today,Mr. Chapoutierembodies a subtle balance between tradition, modernity and commitment to exceptional wines.

        Michel Chapoutier

        passionate wine merchant

Michel Chapoutierleads theMr. Chapoutier's HouseWith a philosophy centered on the pure and faithful expression of each soil within each appellation, soil management is meticulously adapted to each terroir, the grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, and winemaking follows traditional methods. With minimal intervention, the terroirs, climates, and unique characteristics of each vintage are fully expressed in every cuvée.

Today, the House extends over360 hectaresvineyards are spread across prestigious regions, including Hermitage, Roussillon, and even Australia. The Hermitage hill, emblematic of the House, is distinguished by its granite, clay, and limestone soils, offering exceptional conditions for viticulture.Michel Chapoutierconverted all of the vineyards to biodynamics, a choice that demonstrates its deep respect for nature and biodiversity.

Yields are limited, and each plot is vinified separately to create the renowned "Sélections Parcellaires," true masterpieces that capture the essence of each terroir. This expertise allows the House to produce 8 million bottles per year today, double what it was ten years ago, generating a turnover of 50 million euros.

Recognized throughout the world, theMr. Chapoutier's Househas accumulated accolades, including perfect scores (100/100) awarded by the famous critic Robert Parker, a world record.Michel Chapoutier, considered one of the most brilliant wine merchants in France, chairs the Hermitage union and plays a key role in the wine industry as president of the Inter Rhône trade association and the Union of Wine Merchants (UMVIN).

Through its wines, from Hermitage to Côtes-du-Roussillon, the House embodies a perfect harmony between respect for nature, human expertise and innovation, creating wines that reflect the authenticity and richness of the terroirs.
