The Cahors appellation covers just over 4,000 hectares of vineyards in the Lot department. It is located near the town of the same name, southeast of Agen. This AOC is renowned for the very dark color of its wines, sometimes almost black! The Cahors vineyards are primarily planted on limestone plateaus, as well as on the ancient alluvial terraces of the Lot River. The climate is a blend of oceanic and Mediterranean. Cahors produces only red wine from Malbec, Merlot, and Tannat grapes.
Cedar Castle
Château du Cèdre was founded by Charles and Marie-Thérèse Verhaeghe in 1958. It takes its name from the now century-old cedar tree that stands at its entrance. The estate, which had one hectare of vines at its inception, now cultivates 27. Pascal and Jean-Marc, the founders' sons, manage it using Ecocert-certified organic farming practices.
In the Cahors appellation , Château du Cèdre produces several wines .
“Château du Cèdre” is a blend of Malbec , Merlot, and Tannat aged for 22 months in oak barrels. It is a fruity wine that can be enjoyed within 10 years. “Le Cèdre” is a pure Malbec that can be cellared for at least 15 years and pairs wonderfully with a venison stew. “GC Cahors” is also 100% Malbec. Refined and elegant, its aging potential is even greater. “Extra Libre” is a natural wine made from Malbec and Merlot , round and delicate, bursting with fruit.
The other vintages are called “Le Cèdre Héritage” and “Chatons du Cèdre”
