History of the Estate Vega Sicilia - Spain

the story of Vega Sicilia - Spain

History of the Vega Sicilia Estate

A legacy of prestige and passion

The Vega Sicilia estate was founded in 1864 by Eloy Lecanda, a Spanish engineer trained in France, who introduced noble grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Malbec to the Ribera del Duero, varieties then unknown in the region. This pioneering approach gave rise to an innovative wine style, inspired by the great wines of Bordeaux while capturing the soul of the Spanish terroir.

Over the decades, Vega Sicilia has passed through the hands of several owners, each contributing to its renown. But it is under the Álvarez family's leadership, since 1982, that the estate has reached the heights of its global reputation. Pablo Álvarez, the current head, imposes exemplary rigor both in the vineyard and the winery, reinforcing the pursuit of continuous excellence.

Vega Sicilia's philosophy is based on patience: some vintages are only released after ten years of aging, ensuring wine lovers enjoy wines of rare harmony. Meticulous care is taken at every stage of production, from the hand-sorting of the grapes to aging in handcrafted barrels made in-house. This exacting standard has elevated Vega Sicilia to the ranks of global icons, on par with the finest French wines.

Today, the estate is part of the groupTempos Vega Siciliawhich also shines through other exceptional properties, such as Alión, Pintia, Oremus, and Macán. A wine empire that perpetuates excellence, generation after generation.

        The Vega Sicilia Vineyard

A unique terroir shaped by nature

Located in the Ribera del Duero wine region, the Vega Sicilia vineyard enjoys a privileged location between 700 and 900 meters above sea level. It extends over nearly210 hectaresof which approximately140 hectaresare dedicated exclusively to the production of the house's great wines. This geographical location, combined with a rigorous continental climate, offers ideal conditions: cold winters, hot summers and a large temperature range promote a slow and complete ripening of the grapes.

The terroir is remarkably rich: alternating clay-limestone, gravelly, and alluvial soils give the wines their unique complexity and structure. This mosaic of soils allows for varied expressions, depending on the plot, and contributes to the harmonious blending of the cuvées.

Vega Sicilia's viticulture is based on sustainable and responsible practices. The estate is committed to an environmentally friendly approach, without official certification but with exemplary practices: manual soil cultivation, drastic yield reduction, and the absence of unnecessary synthetic products. Each vine is tended with the utmost care to guarantee optimal quality.

Historical grape varieties —Tempranillo(called Tinto Fino locally),Cabernet Sauvignon,MerlotAndMalbec— are vinified separately to preserve the authenticity of each individual plot. This meticulous care in the vineyard is reflected in the exceptional depth, elegance, and longevity of Vega Sicilia wines.

        Winemaking at Vega Sicilia

An art of patience and excellence

Winemaking at Domaine Vega Sicilia is based on a unique expertise, combining ancestral tradition with subtle innovations. Each harvest is carried out by hand, with rigorous selection bunch by bunch. After delicate destemming, the berries undergo a slow fermentation, promoting a gentle extraction of aromas and tannins.

The aging process, a true signature of Vega Sicilia, is exceptionally complex. The wines are aged for very long periods—often more than10 yearsfor the legendary vintageÚnico— in different types of containers: new and used French and American oak barrels, large capacity casks. The objective is to give the wine a silky tannic structure, infinite aromatic complexity and exceptional aging potential.

Each year, the estate makes its own barrels to maintain complete control over the aging process. The final blend, achieved after numerous trials, aims to obtain the perfect balance between the natural power of the grapes and the finesse sought by the house.

Wines from Vega Sicilia, such asÚnico,Valbuena 5thor the more affordable vintageAliónThey all express an impressive aromatic depth: notes of ripe black fruits, balsamic touches, accents of sweet spices, all carried by a freshness that gives them an unparalleled elegance.

Buying a wine from Domaine Vega Sicilia is acquiring much more than a bottle: it is offering yourself a piece of Spanish wine history, a rare emotion, and a monument to patience and oenological perfection.
