The Madiran appellation covers 1,200 hectares of vineyards straddling the Gers, Pyrénées-Atlantiques, and Hautes-Pyrénées departments, northeast of Pau. The Pacherenc de Vic-Bihl appellation also lies within this same vineyard area. It is an AOC (Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée) for red wine only, produced from Tannat, Cabernet Franc , Cabernet Sauvignon , and Fer Servadou, a local grape variety . Madiran wines are often very full-bodied and tannic , requiring at least a year of aging in the cellar before being enjoyed .
Château Bouscassé Brumont Vineyards
In Maumusson-Laguian, Château Bouscassé is the historic property of the Brumont family. It has been managed since 1980 by Alain Brumont, an icon of Southwest viticulture.
Four vintages are offered from different terroirs.
“Bouscassé” is an elegant and charming wine. It is a blend of Tannat, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc grown on clay-limestone soils. “ Vieilles Vignes ” is delicate, made entirely from Tannat grapes from vines 50 to 100 years old. “Argile Rouge” is a rarity, a supple and smooth wine with aromas of blood orange and caramelized fruit.
Aydie Castle
The Aydie vineyard has belonged to the Laplace family since 1927. In 1982, the Château was purchased and became its emblem. Today, Jean-Luc, François, Marie, and Bernard Laplace manage the 58 hectares of the estate. They produce 11 wines , including 3 Madiran appellation wines.
“Château Aydie” and “Odé d'Aydie” are 100% Tannat wines, bottled after 20 months of aging. Their distinctive terroirs shape and define them. “Aydie l'Origine” is a blend of Tannat and Cabernet Franc, aged in oak barrels for 12 months. It is a straightforward and generous wine , ideal with tapas.
Château Montus Vineyards Brumont
Château Montus was acquired in 1980 by Alain Brumont, who wanted to create his own wine outside the family estate. He achieved the remarkable feat of crafting a wine made solely from Tannat grapes, transcending the rustic reputation of this variety to transform it into a refined and elegant nectar. The excellence of this estate is such that some have nicknamed it " the Pétrus of the Southwest" !
“Prestige” was a game-changer in Madiran: in 1985, it was the first wine made entirely from Tannat grapes to achieve such a high level of excellence. In the same vein, “Montus Rouge” is a smooth and elegant blend of Tannat and Cabernet Sauvignon. The “XL” cuvée from Château Montus is a 100% Tannat wine, aged for 40 months in demi-muid barrels. We recommend waiting 15 years before enjoying this great wine . It will then reveal itself to be rich and balanced, with aromas of mocha, leather, and wood.
