Le Petit Lion du Marquis de Las Cases is the second wine of the legendary Château Léoville Las Cases, an emblem of the Saint-Julien appellation in the Médoc, on Bordeaux's left bank. Located near Pauillac, this estate borders Château Latour and benefits from one of the region's most prestigious terroirs. Made from a rigorous selection of parcels and young vines within the estate, Le Petit Lion perfectly embodies the elegance and structure characteristic of Las Cases, while offering a more approachable style in its youth. A wine for connoisseurs, both refined and seductive.

Notes and pairings

Notes and pairings

Tasting notes

Le Petit Lion 2012 boasts a deep ruby robe with garnet highlights. The nose reveals a beautiful aromatic palette, dominated by black fruits, cedar, and a touch of sweet spice. The palate is ample, structured yet not austere, supported by supple tannins and lovely freshness. The persistent finish is reminiscent of great wines meant for aging, with a return of blackberry and a subtle, perfectly integrated oak influence.

Food & wine pairings

This Saint-Julien pairs perfectly with a roast rack of lamb, a grilled ribeye steak or a duck breast.

The Léoville Las Cases vineyard stretches across one of the finest gravelly terroirs of the Médoc, resting on deep gravelly soils interspersed with clay-sand subsoil. The vines destined for Le Petit Lion benefit from the same grape varieties as the grand vin, and from meticulous cultivation. The vineyard's ideal exposure, near the Gironde estuary, promotes slow and complete ripening of the grapes, guaranteeing remarkable balance and great aging potential.

Owner and history

The estate is managed by Jean-Hubert Delon, heir to a long family line that has headed Las Cases since the 19th century. A visionary and exacting man, he has elevated the estate to the pinnacle of the Médoc's great wines. His philosophy is based on excellence, the pure expression of the terroir, and sustainable viticulture. Le Petit Lion embodies this approach, offering a cuvée true to the estate's identity, but designed for earlier drinking, without compromising the nobility of its origins.

Vinification and aging

Winemaking at Château Léoville Las Cases is done by plot, with fermentations in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Maceration is long to extract the full potential of the fruit.
Le Petit Lion 2012 is then aged for 14 to 16 months in French oak barrels, approximately 30% of which are new. This meticulous aging process gives the wine a beautiful depth, while preserving the finesse and approachability that define its style.
