Description

Located in the heart of the Saumur appellation in the Loire Valley, Domaine Antoine Sanzay has become, in just a few years, a leading name for Chenin Blanc enthusiasts. Based in Varrains, Antoine Sanzay embodies the new generation of Loire Valley winemakers, passionate about precise winemaking and expressing the terroir. Working his vines organically, he sensitively reveals the full richness of the Saumur tuffeau soil. The 2021 Les Essarts cuvée illustrates this quest for purity: a great white wine, both crystalline and profound, born from a unique location and masterful craftsmanship.

Notes and pairings

Notes and pairings

Tasting notes

With its luminous pale yellow hue, Les Essarts 2021 offers an expressive nose of white flowers and citrus. On the palate, the attack is lively and precise, driven by a tonic freshness and a delicately chalky texture. The wine, both taut and saline, lingers in a beautifully persistent, mineral finish. A wine of great precision, combining energy, finesse, and intensity in remarkable balance.

Food & wine pairings

Ideal with seafood, sea bream ceviche, mature goat cheeses or poultry in cream sauce.

Producer

Producer

The Domaine Antoine Sanzay vineyard stretches across limestone slopes typical of the Saumur region, with white tuffeau soil particularly well-suited to Chenin Blanc. The vines in the Les Essarts plot are rigorously cultivated organically and benefit from ideal orientation and drainage. This unique, poor, and well-drained terroir allows the grape variety to produce grapes of great aromatic concentration, while preserving tension and minerality.

Owner and history

A former rugby player turned winemaker, Antoine Sanzay embodies the authenticity and rigor of the great Loire Valley winemakers. Taking over the family estate in 1999, he quickly committed to organic and plot-by-plot viticulture. His goal: to produce distinctive wines, true to their terroir, without artifice. Thanks to his meticulous work and a profound respect for nature, he has elevated the estate to the ranks of the most sought-after producers in the Loire Valley.

Vinification and aging

Winemaking at Antoine Sanzay is based on a minimal-intervention approach, favoring the natural expression of the fruit and terroir. Fermentation occurs with indigenous yeasts, and aging takes place in demi-muids (600-liter barrels) on fine lees, without stirring. For the 2021 Les Essarts cuvée, this subtle aging of approximately one year refines the aromas, develops the texture, and enhances the saline tension of the Chenin Blanc, while preserving the energy and vibrancy of the vintage.
