"In 2022, the more refined style that began to emerge here, along with the vintage's distinctive character, resulted in a very elegant Masseto. The 2022 is a superbly refined Masseto." Antonio Galloni, 95 points/100

" It is generous throughout the mouthfeel, and although approachable from the start, it reveals itself to be more structured in the finish ." Jeb Dunnuck, 98+ points/100

Masseto is a cult Italian winery located in Tuscany , renowned for producing one of the world's finest Merlot wines . Situated on the coastal hills of Bolgheri , the vineyard benefits from a unique terroir of blue clay.

A new sense of elegance is palpable at Masseto . The wines were already tending to move away from power and opulence before estate manager Axel Heinz returned to Bordeaux at the beginning of 2023. His departure likely accelerated the changes that were already underway. The new team, led by winemaker Gaia Cinnirella and production manager Marco Balsimelli, has finished and blended the 2022s, wines that display a lighter style.

The Masseto vineyard stretches across clay-limestone soils, ideal for growing Merlot. The vines, over 20 years old, benefit from optimal sunshine, enhanced by the proximity of the sea. This unique microclimate allows for exceptionally ripe grapes, while preserving the acidity necessary for a balanced wine. Environmentally friendly viticultural practices are central to the estate's philosophy, guaranteeing the quality and authenticity of every wine produced.

Owner and history

Currently, the Masseto estate is managed by the Frescobaldi family, who maintain a centuries-old winemaking tradition in Tuscany. Their passion for wine and their respect for the terroir are at the heart of their philosophy. The Frescobaldis have successfully combined innovation with traditional expertise, making Masseto a symbol of Italian winemaking excellence. Their commitment to quality and sustainability is reflected in every bottle, making Masseto a wine prized by connoisseurs worldwide.

Vinification and aging

The Masseto wine is made with meticulous care. The grapes are carefully hand-sorted before being destemmed and crushed. Fermentation takes place in wooden vats, allowing for a gentle extraction of aromas and tannins. The wine is then aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, some of which are new. This crucial phase imparts the wine's complex structure and subtle oak notes, while respecting the pure expression of the Merlot. Every step is carefully considered to reveal the best of the terroir.
