Description

Located in Varrains, in the heart of the Saumur-Champigny appellation, Domaine Antoine Sanzay has established itself as one of the Loire Valley's most promising names. A passionate winemaker, Antoine Sanzay took over the family vineyards in the 1990s to create wines that are authentic, vibrant, and deeply rooted in their terroir. Certified organic, the estate makes the most of the region's typical limestone soils. Its Les Salles Martin cuvée, from a remarkable terroir, perfectly embodies the elegance of Cabernet Franc, balancing intense fruit, minerality, and exceptional equilibrium.

Notes and pairings

Tasting notes

The 2020 Saumur-Champigny Les Salles Martin first captivates with its intense ruby color and violet highlights. The nose, precise and pure, reveals aromas of fresh red fruit, violet, and slightly chalky notes. On the palate, the texture is silky, supported by a beautiful tension and fine tannins. The long, mineral finish underscores the elegance and precision of this exceptional vintage from Antoine Sanzay.

Food & wine pairings

This wine pairs perfectly with a pink veal chop, grilled lamb or a mature soft cheese.

The estate's vineyard covers 11 hectares, cultivated organically on tuffeau soils typical of the Saumur region. The vines destined for the Les Salles Martin cuvée are located on a south-facing limestone slope, which promotes optimal ripeness of the Cabernet Franc while preserving its remarkable freshness. Yields are intentionally low, and each plot is meticulously tended to express the full unique character of the terroir.

Owner and history

Antoine Sanzay embodies the new generation of Loire Valley winemakers: demanding, passionate, and resolutely committed to respecting the terroir. A former member of the local cooperative, he took over the family estate in the 2000s and has continuously improved it. His organic approach, minimal-intervention winemaking, and constant pursuit of precision have allowed the estate to become one of the most respected in the region. His Les Salles Martin cuvée is one of its finest examples.

Vinification and aging

At Domaine Antoine Sanzay, winemaking is done naturally, with indigenous yeasts and without unnecessary additives. Extractions are gentle, favoring infusion over maceration.
For Les Salles Martin 2020, aging takes place over 12 to 14 months in used demi-muids, which allows the wine's structure to be refined without masking the fruit or minerality. The result is a pure, vertical wine, crafted for both aging and fine dining.
